The Unfurling of the Cosmos

4 - 14 July 2024

About

THE UNFURLING OF THE COSMOS invites you to take a journey up to a large, open air carpark rooftop, to re-experience the city skyline, the sunset and nocturnal horizons, and the vast sky above us that reaches into the milky way and beyond.

This captivating and contemplative atmospheric installation has been created especially for RE//PERTH by sonic-spatial-social artist Luke Jaaniste from Mesmerism, who is known for working with unique arrangements of atmospheric technologies and spatialised music-scapes that reveal and revel in the wind and weather around us.

Where is the cosmos — which has been unfurling since ancient times, and continues to do so? It is found in the great vastness of galaxies and stars, which the nocturnal glow of inner cities, obscure in this electrified age. But we are living on a planet, swirling around a sun, which travels around our galaxy, and so the cosmos is also our sky, our atmosphere, the air we breathe in and out into our lungs and bloodstream... and thus the cosmos is also our bodies which absorb to live, to feel, to gaze up into lazing sunsets, the dazzle of a night time cityscape, and the inky darkness of the beyond.
